“MONEY SHOULD NOT BE A REASON CHILDREN ARE KEPT AWAY FROM SCHOOL” - UAU FOUNDATION

For many children, the difference between being in a classroom and staying at home is not ability, not willingness, but money.

Across communities in Cross River State, primary education, meant to be the foundation of learning, is too often disrupted by financial limitations. Children eager to learn are held back, not by a lack of potential, but by circumstances beyond their control. School fee continues to quietly push children out of classrooms. What should be a basic right has, for many families, now becomes a recurring struggle.

This is the reality the UAU Foundation has been committed to changing. Driven by the belief that every child deserves access to education, the foundation has continued to remove financial barriers that stand between children and their future.

In the first quarter of the year, that commitment translated into direct impact.

The UAU Foundation fully covered two terms of school fees for over 300 pupils across Calabar South and Calabar Municipality, and over 420 pupils in Obudu Local Government Area, Cross River State.

For many of these children, this support meant one thing - they get stay in school and build the foundations of their future.

Beyond paying school fees, the UAU Foundation also facilitated an effective learning process for the children, where pupils received essential writing materials, including: Notebooks, Pens and pencils, Erasers and sharpeners.

This simple intervention reached several public primary schools across the state, highlighting the meaningful impact of building a solid child education background, and also enhancing their academic performances and confidence in classrooms.

The UAU Foundation during the course of the outreach covered a total number of 31 schools within 3 LGA’s in Cross River State.

This initiative marks the first school fee support project of the year by the UAU Foundation, with plans to expand its reach and impact across several communities in Cross River State.

At its core, the mission remains clear: to ensure that no child is forced out of school because of financial hardship.

Education is more than attendance, it is opportunity, growth, and the foundation for a better future and y removing one of the biggest barriers to access, the UAU Foundation is not just keeping children in school, it is helping them stay on the path to becoming all they can be.

The Cross River State House of Assembly received a detailed briefing on the State’s ongoing digital transformation efforts, with lawmakers highlighting improvements in governance systems and revenue performance.

The presentation was made on February 13, 2026, during a session with the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation in Calabar. The Committee invited the State’s technology and Infrastructure consultants, Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd and Dobenat Limited, to provide updates on digital and infrastructure projects introduced since their appointment in August 2023.

Proceedings opened with a prayer led by Mrs. Patricia, after which members of the Committee were formally introduced. Those present included the Chairman of the Finance and Appropriation Committee and Member representing Yakurr 1 Constituency, Hon. Cyril James Omini; the Vice Chairman and Member representing Etung Constituency, Hon. Kingsley Ntui; Chief Whip and Member representing Boki 2 Constituency, Rt. Hon. Hillary Ekpang Bisong; Deputy Minority Whip and Member representing Yala 2 Constituency, Hon. Dr. Martins Achadu; House Leader and Member representing Odukpani Constituency, Rt. Hon. Francis Bassey Asuquo; Secretary and Member representing Abi Constituency, Rt. Hon. Davies Etta (Abi), Secretary; Member representing Yakurr 2 Constituency, Hon. Dr. Mercy Akpama; and the Member representing Akpabuyo Constituency, Hon. Bassey Effiong Bassey (Akpabuyo).

The Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd team led by the Chief Executive Officer, Miss Ajoke Akinlabi; the Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Brown Okoi; the Chief Technology Officer, Mr. Godswill Adie; the Head of Business, Mr. Victory Bassey and Mr. Emmanuel Olube, Head of Products.

Dobenat Limited was represented by the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sunday Okoi, and the Head of Infrastructure, Mr. Elisha Agbama.

In her presentation, Miss Ajoke, Chief Executive Officer of Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd, said the State’s reform agenda goes beyond deploying digital tools. She explained that the goal is to strengthen institutional oversight, promote transparency, and improve service delivery across Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

She also presented an overview of the Central Authentication and Payment System (CAPS) deployed for Cross River State, describing it as the backbone of the State’s digital ecosystem. She explained further that the unified system supports secure identity management, centralised revenue collection, real-time transaction tracking, and seamless integration across platforms, reducing revenue leakages and improving compliance and the Internally Generated Revenue for the State.

The Committee was also presented with data highlighting significant growth in the State’s Internally Generated Revenue. Miss Ajoke disclosed that Cross River State recorded over a 157% increase in revenue within three years, driven by the implementation of CRS-CAPS, which has strengthened digital tax enforcement and improved transparency across the system.

She attributed the growth to the automation of revenue channels, centralised monitoring of payments, elimination of leakages, and improved reconciliation processes.

Mr. Victory Bassey, Nugi Technologies Nig Ltd., Head of Business, further informed the Committee that we have developed and deployed a robust website for the State and across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, providing structured digital operations and citizen access to government information and services while ensuring uniform standards across MDAs.

He also outlined key digital services launched under the reform programme. He highlighted Cross River Pay as the State’s unified payment gateway, integrated across platforms to ensure secure and traceable transactions.

He explained that the Tax Management System has strengthened revenue administration by enabling digital taxpayer registration, automated assessment, real-time payment tracking, and improved compliance monitoring.

On land administration, Mr. Victory detailed the digitisation of land processes, which has aided the automation of getting a Certificate of Occupancy, automation of the Certificate of Consent, automation of Building Permit, survey indexing and charting and records syncing across the land cluster of Cross River State, covering the Ministering of Lands, Office of the Surveyor General, Cross River State Geographic Information Agency, and the Department of Town planning.

According to him, the reforms have significantly reduced processing timelines, improved transparency, minimised manual interference, and enhanced record accuracy within the land cluster.

He noted that the integration of these platforms ensures that land transactions, tax payments, and other government services are linked within a centralised digital framework, improving accountability across the system.

The team also informed the lawmakers that the State’s digital transformation efforts have attracted national recognition, with Cross River State receiving awards for innovation in e-governance and revenue automation. They stated that the recognition reflects the measurable impact of the reforms on governance efficiency and service delivery.

Also presenting, Mr. Godswill Adie, Chief Technology Officer of Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd, talked about how portals have been deployed for the Budget and Accountant General’s office, both of which have been linked to the Central Authentication and Payment System for the State.

The Cross River State Budget Portal provides transparent access to the state’s budgeting process, allowing stakeholders to view, track and monitor budget allocations, expenditures and fiscal performance. It also helps with budget clearance. He mentioned in his presentation that the Cross River State Accountant General’s portal serves as the official platform for managing and reporting the state’s financial activities, including fund disbursements, budget compliance, and final account reporting.

Mr. Emmanuel Olube, Head of Products Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd, highlighted the role of the My Cross River App as a citizen-facing gateway for government services. He said the platform integrates secure digital payments and reduces the need for physical visits to government offices. He further shared current active features on the platform, including a payment and wallet system, grant management, bill payments, lottery and gaming, events, and a host of other great features.

Also speaking, Mr. Brown Okoi, Chief Operations Officer of Nugi Technologies Nig Ltd, presented the School Management System deployed across all tertiary institutions in the State. He disclosed that the portal has been implemented to all State Tertiary Institutions and Colleges of Nursing.

The portal manages core academic and administrative processes, including admissions, student registration, fee payments, transcript processing, and result management. He explained that the system improves transparency, reduces manual bottlenecks, and ensures accurate record-keeping across the institutions.

On infrastructure, Elisha Agbama, Head of Infrastructure at Dobenat Limited, detailed the network and hosting systems supporting the digital ecosystem. He disclosed that the State currently operates 340kW of installed solar capacity with over 1,000kWh of backup battery storage, alongside deployments across 13 MDAs to ensure stable operations.

In their responses, members of the Committee commended the Nugi Technologies Nig Ltd and Dobenat Limited teams for the progress recorded so far. Lawmakers acknowledged the measurable revenue growth and improvements in system integration, describing the reforms as a positive step toward strengthening governance.

They, however, urged the consultants to ensure that the digital systems and infrastructure are extended to more Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and institutions across the State to guarantee wider impact and uniform service delivery.

The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to sustained legislative oversight to ensure that the reforms continue to deliver tangible benefits to government operations and citizens alike.

On the 10th of January, 2026 at the Calabar International Convention Centre (CICC), leaders, partners, friends and well-wishers gathered for The Builder’s Odyssey, a landmark event that brought together three powerful milestones in one celebration: 10 years of Nugi Technologies Nig. The evening began with a vibrant red carpet as guests arrived in style, setting the tone for what would be a rich and well-curated experience. The formal programme opened with an opening prayer by Rev. Fr. Cletus Udoh who was represented by Rev. Fr. Edward Osoro, grounding the event in gratitude and reflection.

The event was graced by several distinguished personalities from government, academia, finance, media and the private sector.

The Co-Founder of Nugi Technologies, Mr Sunday Okoi, then took the stage to speak on the company’s journey so far, reflecting on its humble beginnings, defining moments, and the collective effort that has sustained its growth over ten years.

The book, titled The Blood of the Phoenix: A Memoir of Sickle Cell, Faith and Service, offers a deeply personal account of resilience, faith, and commitment to service.A thoughtful book review and interactive session followed, led by Ambassador Gabe Onah. The session explored the author’s lived experience with sickle cell and how it shaped his faith, resilience, and outlook on service. Guests gained deeper insight into the personal struggles, strength, and purpose behind the memoir, making the message of the book both relatable and powerful. Donations were later made in support of the book and its mission.

Culture, Celebration and Community
Cultural performances by Obudu and Efik dance troupes brought colour and heritage to the evening, celebrating Cross River’s rich traditions.

Winners of the UAU Carnival Calabar Challenge were also celebrated, with prize awards as follows:

The President of Nugi Group, Augustine Ugi, speaks with JUSTICE OKAMGBA on the growing importance of data centres to Nigeria’s economy. He stresses that investments must extend beyond Lagos and Abuja, which currently host nearly all existing facilities, if the country is to avoid falling behind in the global digital race.

Why does expanding data infrastructure beyond Lagos and Abuja matter for Nigeria’s role in the global data economy?

The future of Nigeria will always be tied to Cross River State because it holds resources critical to national development. By locating our new data centre in Calabar, we are building a case for decentralising investment in Nigeria and pushing for opportunities beyond Lagos and Abuja.

Calabar was chosen because it offers unique advantages: lower operating costs, a first-mover advantage, and strong alignment with the city’s tourism ecosystem. It is strategically located near Calabar Airport and benefits from visibility around Africa’s largest street party, the Calabar Festival.

Most importantly, a Tier 4 data centre provides about 99.99 per cent uptime, making downtime almost impossible. To achieve this, you need three to four independent power sources. The Calabar site is ideal because it is close to a waterfall, enabling us to generate hydroelectricity through a turbine system. The land also offers enough space to build a solar grid capable of storing power for three to four months. In addition, Cross River has abundant natural gas reserves that can be liquefied for electricity generation.

What direct economic benefits, jobs, tax revenue, and business attraction will this project bring to Cross River State and Nigeria as a whole?

The data centre is a large-scale infrastructure project, and its construction will create jobs and opportunities for local talent in Calabar.

Currently, Nigeria lacks sufficient data centres to manage the huge volume of data generated daily, forcing much of it to be stored abroad. A facility of this scale changes that. It enables companies to store data locally, ensuring apps and digital services run faster and more reliably since the information is hosted closer to users.

Global platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, which are under increasing pressure to localise data, can now leverage this facility. That translates into new foreign income streams for Nigeria. For banks and other financial institutions, the centre will mean more reliable uptime, fewer disruptions, and reduced failed transactions.

Nigeria faces a pressing need to build digital talent. How will Nugi Innovations support this in the data centre?

Nugi Innovations is the incubation arm of Nugi Technologies. When we encounter individuals with brilliant ideas, we nurture them at Nugi Innovations. Once the ideas mature, we either partner with the innovators to market them or spin them off into standalone organisations.

Beyond incubation, we run training programmes for students, professionals, and corporate organisations, covering both theoretical and practical skills. Many trainees go on to intern with Nugi Technologies and later transition into full-time staff.

The tech city and data centre naturally create new opportunities for Nugi Innovations students, who will receive hands-on training on live projects. This ensures seamless integration into the system. Projects of this scale demand specialised expertise, and we are cultivating that expertise locally.

The goal is not only to build infrastructure but also to develop human capital, ensuring Nigeria has the talent to run, manage, and expand these systems over time.

Beyond the data centre, Nugi Group is expanding into construction, real estate, and agriculture. How do these sectors tie into your vision of a 370-hectare tech city?

The vision is to build a self-sustaining tech ecosystem. It starts with the data centre but extends to Nugi Innovations, Nugi Farms (an agritech estate), modern housing for young professionals, and a commercial hub.

Africa has one of the largest youth populations in the world. Without infrastructure and opportunities, young people risk unemployment or forced migration. Our tech city provides a place where they can develop solutions for Africa, in Africa, whether in fintech, agritech, or digital services.

By creating these opportunities, we can help Africa move from being a consumer of global technology to a creator and exporter of it.

How is Nugi Group financing this project with a proposed budget of $70m for phase one?

The project is being financed through a mix of private sector investors, public sector partners, and Nugi Technologies. Several investors have already made significant commitments, while discussions with others are ongoing. Details remain confidential at this stage.

How confident are you that your multi-source power approach will meet Tier 4 uptime standards considering Nigeria’s struggles with unreliable electricity?

We are very confident, because our design is not just about adding solar or backup; it is a hybrid, multi-source power infrastructure that strengthens the local grid while guaranteeing internal resilience.

The facility will draw power from multiple sources: solar farms, gas turbines, hydropower from a nearby waterfall (up to 25 MW), and the national grid.

On top of that, we are deploying a $50m battery energy storage system, capable of sustaining operations for up to 10 days if all three primary sources fail, an extremely unlikely scenario. Each modular unit has N+N redundancy, ensuring uninterrupted service even if two systems fail simultaneously.

This is not theoretical. We already operate two mini data centres in Cross River State with over 99 per cent uptime annually, even without hydro backup. The experience from these facilities is shaping the design of advanced control systems, real-time monitoring, and layered power logic to surpass the 99.995 per cent uptime benchmark for Tier 4 certification.

What is the development timeline?

We have completed the master plan and are finalising pre-development engineering and land preparation. Groundbreaking for the first modular units is expected in Q1 2026.

The 6-unit modular data centre campus will cover six hectares of the 30-hectare tech complex. It is projected to be fully operational by Q4 2027.

However, each module will be rolled out in phases, with the first expected to go live within 12–15 months of commencement. This phased rollout will allow clients to begin migration, testing, and co-location early, even as expansion continues.

Many Nigerian banks and global tech companies worry about cybersecurity and data sovereignty. How will your centre address these concerns?

Cybersecurity and data protection were considered from the outset of this project.

The session brought together key stakeholders in the geospatial sector, including the Surveyor General of Cross River State Surv. Patrick Edet, Former Surveyor General, Surv. Eyo Oku, practicing surveyors, and members of the Nugi Technologies team. Leading the presentation were Mr. Godswill Adie, Chief Technology Officer, and Samuel Ekong, Software Engineer, both of whom played key roles in designing and developing the platform.

In his opening speech, Surv. Patrick Edet encouraged all practicing surveyors to adopt the platform fully to ease their workflows, ensure faster delivery, and support the creation of a state database and cadastre for effective mapping and planning.

This milestone is part of Cross River State’s broader digitisation agenda, aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and traceability in public service delivery, especially within land-related workflows.

Designed with both government efficiency and user experience in mind, the Surveyor General Platform provides licensed surveyors with a secure, end-to-end digital system for managing survey lodgements, eliminating the delays, inconsistencies, and congestion associated with manual processing.

Access to the platform is granted by the Office of the Surveyor General (OSG), which assigns each surveyor a unique login and temporary password. Upon first login, users are prompted to change their password for added security. Once signed in, the dashboard offers a complete overview of their activity, showing pending, submitted, and approved lodgements.

Step-by-Step Lodgement Workflow

1. Payment & Wallet System
   Each lodgement requires a fee. The platform features a wallet system that allows users to fund their accounts using integrated payment gateways. Bulk payments are supported, and once successful, the wallet is instantly credited for seamless processing.
2. Request Lodgement
   Surveyors begin by entering the client's TIN which will bring up all information concerning the client
3. Create Lodgement & Upload Coordinates
   Surveyors then proceed to complete the lodgement form and upload necessary documents and the corresponding coordinate data (typically in Excel or CSV format).
4. Submit Lodgement
   Upon submission, the platform assigns a unique tracking ID and routes the lodgement through the internal review process. During this process, an email is sent to the client when necessary.

Real-Time Tracking & Smart Communication
The platform provides real-time updates at every stage of the lodgement lifecycle. Surveyors and clients (in the client's dashboard) can view progress, respond to queries, and receive feedback directly within the system, eliminating the need for physical follow-ups or repeated office visits.

The presentation concluded with a Q & A session. Participants gave feedback about the platform. The Nugi Technologies team addressed these concerns, reaffirming their commitment to continuous improvement.

These were the words of our CEO, Ms. Akinlabi Ajoke, at the unveiling of the Digitised Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) Scheme in Cross River State.

“Getting a Certificate of Occupancy used to take years, frustrating many landlords and business owners. Now, we are changing that. With this new digital system, we can deliver certificates faster, cleaner, and more efficiently,” the Governor said. And he didn’t just say it. He proved it by personally presenting Certificates of Occupancy to long-awaiting recipients, including Prof. Victor Okon Ansa and Mainland Oil and Gas Company Ltd.

Ms. Akinlabi Ajoke, CEO Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd, shared what this milestone means to us as a tech company rooted in service: “When we say digital, we mean from start to finish. Every stage of the process, from application to final issuance, is now online. This synergy between the Land Cluster, the State Government, Cross River Internal Revenue Service , our Technology Team and Sterling Bank is what makes this breakthrough possible. This is digital transformation at its best. Every process is now online; secure, simple, and efficient.”

Dr. Francis Ekpenyong, Commissioner for Lands, made it clear that this isn’t just about property, it’s about economic access. “This exercise is unlocking Cross Riverians who were locked out of the economy. With these certificates, property owners can now stand tall before any financial institution.” That’s the kind of impact we believe in.

Surv. Patrick Bassey, the State Surveyor General, spoke about the integrity of the new system: “This shows Cross River is now on a digital growth path. These C-of-Os now come with security features like QR codes that make each one verifiable and tamper-proof. I urge citizens to take advantage of this new system.”

Mr. Williams Archibong, Director-General of the Cross River State Geographical Information Agency, highlighted the speed and structure this new system now guarantees: “With the new system, C-of-O for government land will now be issued within 21 days, and within 42 days for private land. This is a major departure from the past administration, where analogue systems led to delays and frequent errors. Now, everything is digitized and streamlined.”

The Cross River State Internal Revenue Service (CRIRS) also played a key role in the success of this reform. By integrating revenue collection into the digital C-of-O system, CRIRS has made secure, trackable payments possible from anywhere, reducing stress for applicants and boosting transparency. This has significantly reduced leakages, increased transparency, and ensured that the State is better positioned to reinvest in infrastructure and public services.

You can’t talk about this reform without mentioning the role of Sterling Bank, a key partner that brought not just financial backing, but deep support for public sector innovation.

Representing Sterling Bank, Chidinma Onyemaizu, the Public Sector Relationship Manager, spoke with conviction about the bank’s role in the transformation journey and the government’s supportive stance: “What we have seen under Governor Otu’s leadership is a government that is not only visionary but also deliberate about creating an enabling environment for institutions like ours to thrive. At Sterling Bank, we are deeply inspired by the transparency and innovation behind this digital C-of-O project. It aligns with our own values, leveraging technology to make lives better. We are proud to support this initiative and will continue to work with the State to improve service delivery and access to finance for all.”

Her remarks reinforced Sterling Bank’s ongoing commitment to fostering public-private partnerships that drive meaningful change in Cross River State.

One of the most powerful moments at the event was the testimony of Prof. Victor Okon Ansa, who had applied for his C-of-O many years ago with no progress until now. “It felt almost impossible to get a C-of-O. But this administration has changed that narrative. It’s a new dawn for Cross River. This reform sends a strong message that the state is open and ready for business.”

On 6th May 2025, Ugi Augustine Ugi had the privilege of taking the stage at the Afribond Ltd × Barclays Eagle Labs Summit in London—an event hosted by Barclays Bank under the theme “De-risking Investments in Africa.” As President and Group Chair of Nugi Group, he was not merely delivering another corporate pitch; He was telling Africa’s story through the lens of people, purpose, and possibility.

Starting his technology career in 2006, Ugi dreamed of building companies that would drive real impact—and today he leads Nugi Group, a multi-sector ecosystem of more than ten technology-first ventures spanning education, infrastructure, power, logistics, media, urban planning, e-commerce, agriculture, and real estate. Each was born from a relentless curiosity and a commitment to solve problems across diverse sectors, and while some are still growing, six are already making bold statements in their fields.

With nearly two decades of experience leading innovation across the continent, Ugi identifies that Africa—and particularly Cross River State in Nigeria —is not just brimming with potential; it’s ready for investment. The Venture Capitalists and great thinkers present at this event were not persuaded with promises of a brighter future, but with proof: evidence of initiatives already transforming communities, catalyzing innovation, and de-risking the path for global partners to join us in Africa’s next chapter.

Ugi began by noting a powerful point that Africa’s future is being shaped by its people—over 70 percent of Sub-Saharan Africans are under 30, and Nigeria’s median age is just 18.1. With a population of 1.54 billion (18.8 percent of the world) growing at roughly 34 percent annually—and Nigeria itself at 234.6 million (up 2.37 percent year-on-year, 54.86 percent urban)—these are not just numbers. Africa’s rapid growth is mostly influenced by youth demographics, a tech-savvy population, and rising life expectancy.

One of the most human-centered examples Ugi shared was in Cross River State, where Nugi Technologies partnered with the government to lead digital and legal reforms like automating land titles, protecting contracts, and enabling revenue-sharing models with clear accountability that directly improve lives—and investment outcomes.

“Investors no longer have to wonder if the rules will change tomorrow,” Ugi said. “We have made sure the foundation is solid.”

Thanks to platforms like Cross River Pay, internally generated revenue jumped from an average ₦20 billion per year (over the past decade) to ₦31 billion in 2023 and ₦46.7 billion in 2024—up over 120%—while citizen engagement apps simplified communication with the government.

What impressed many at the summit beyond the tech itself, was the intentionality behind the robust systems, laws and legal frameworks Cross River has built to de-risk investments. They include:

1. PPP-Enabled Revenue Sharing: Automated, real-time profit splits between government and private partners with full transparency.
2. Policy Continuity: Contracts and revenue-sharing agreements survive political transitions, using embedded sustainability clauses.
3. Digital Contracts & Fast-Track Arbitration: Investors gain speedy, enforceable dispute resolution in a local and globally respected setting.
4. Digitized Land Titles (C of O): A fully online process reduces delays and prevents double allocations.
5. Legally Backed Automated Revenue Collection: Hospitality, transport, and service sectors benefit from clear, accountable tax systems.
6. Transparent Public Procurement: Open bidding and anti-corruption measures make infrastructure projects more trustworthy.
7. Digital Asset Registry: State-owned properties are logged and traceable, protecting public-private partnerships against disputes.

On top of these, Cross River is drafting laws for data privacy, digital identity, and public-private collaboration on digital infrastructure—sending the message that Africa isn’t just a land of potential, but one of preparedness for 21st-century commerce.

Ugi outlined that Cross River State has shifted from abstract megaprojects to real, investor-led initiatives that deliver tangible impact across transport, energy, healthcare and digital infrastructure:

• Cross River Air (US$200 m+ valuation)
  A PPP to acquire a four-aircraft fleet (two new), linking Calabar to regional markets. It boosts logistics efficiency, tourism and agricultural exports, positioning the city as West Africa’s air hub. Status: financing closed; ongoing capital injections.
• Calabar–Northern Cross River Railway (US$400 m valuation)
  A long-term concession PPP connecting Calabar to the state’s northernmost LGAs. By cutting logistics costs and opening trade corridors, it integrates rural economies into urban supply chains. Groundbreaking is complete; private partner secured.
• Bakassi Deep Sea Port (US$3 b valuation)
  An investor-led PPP with Arise Group, Afreximbank, AfDB and Chinese Exim. Near financial close, it will transform Cross River into Central Africa’s primary maritime gateway.
• Cross River Data Center (US$30 m Phase 1; US$70 m total)
  A modular, scalable facility for AI, e-governance, private cloud and disaster recovery. Under investor discussions, it underpins the state’s digital sovereignty and cloud-native economy.
• Greater Calabar Smart City (US$800 m valuation)
  A 470 ha mixed-use innovation zone powered by Nugi Group. Features include a data center, medical city, creative economy hub, renewable energy, diverse housing, farm complex and a 30,000-seat event center—blending technology, sustainability and livability.

Each project reflects Cross River’s move toward private-sector leadership, reduced fiscal exposure and scalable, legally underpinned impact.

Perhaps the most human part of Ugi’s presentation was his challenge to the global community: “Stop treating Africa as a problem to solve. See it for what it really is—a partner ready to build with you.” He acknowledged the challenges but pointed to real progress—people-first policies, transparent systems, and courageous local leadership. Africa is no longer “emerging”; it is engaged and delivering.

Today, with rapid population growth, a young, increasingly skilled workforce, rising life expectancy and modernized legal frameworks, the continent’s foundations for sustained investment success are firmly in place. Cross River State exemplifies this readiness: bold governance reforms, robust public-private partnership models and a pipeline of strategic, investor-led projects across digital infrastructure, logistics, energy, healthcare and smart urban development.

Following his presentation, a vibrant panel discussion—moderated by Barbara AO and featuring Parminder Vir Obe and Sidi Saccoh—explored “Venture Capital Trends & De-risking African Investments.”

Ugi emphasised the critical role of policymakers education to incorporate conducive legal frameworks for investors. He further stressed the need for founders and business leaders like himself to replicate themselves in successors through mentorship to allow continuity and sustainability. The panel also addressed how to dismantle barriers to funding African ventures—from regulatory complexity to founders’ challenges—and highlighted the urgency of equipping public-sector officials with a clear understanding of private-sector realities.

In a move to enhance efficiency and transparency, the State Government, in collaboration with Nugi Technologies Nig. Ltd and Sterling Bank, officially handed over seven new vehicles to the land cluster.

The event, held at Cross River State Ministry of Lands and Urban Development on March 19th, 2025 at 9:00 AM, was not just a symbolic gesture but a statement of intent; one that reinforces the Governor's “People First” Mantra by restoring confidence in all lands-related operations. Six Brand New Toyota Hilux Trucks and One Toyota Hiace Bus were distributed amongst the three agencies: the Ministry of Lands and Urban Development, Office of the Surveyor General, and Cross River Geographic Information Agency (CRGIA).

Addressing the attendees, the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Lands and Urban Development, Chief Francis Ekpeyong, highlighted the broader implications of the initiative. He explained that with these new vehicles, his team would be better equipped to execute land-related assignments across the State effectively. According to him, the move sets a new standard for operational efficiency, ensuring that land services in the State meet national and global best practices.

Mr. William Archibong, the Director General of CRGIA, emphasized that adding these vehicles would enhance the agency’s ability to conduct surveys, inspections, and mapping exercises with greater speed and accuracy. He expressed his appreciation to the Governor of Cross River State and the consultants for prioritizing efficiency in land management.

Echoing similar sentiments, Surveyor General of the State, Mr. Patrick Edet Bassey described the initiative as a pivotal step in streamlining operations in the lands cluster. He also expressed gratitude to the Governor of Cross River State for restoring confidence in the Lands Cluster, emphasizing that this renewed trust would enhance efficiency and drive improvements in land administration and service delivery.

He also expressed gratitude to the consultants, Nugi Technologies Nig. Throughout  her  career,  she  has  demonstrated  an  unwavering  commitment  to excellence,  consistently  driving  growth,  fostering  collaboration,  and implementing  forward-thinking  strategies.  Her  ability  to  lead  with  clarity, inspire  teams,  and  navigate  complex  challenges  has  earned  her  the  respect and  admiration  of  colleagues  and  industry  peers  alike.

In a world where opportunities are out of reach for many, Mr. Ugi Augustine Ugi has been creating lasting change by ensuring vulnerable children have access to quality education. Every year, on his birthday, Ugi celebrates by providing school fees for children in need across Cross River State.

This year, Ugi extended his generosity to over 483 students in Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Akpabuyo and Obudu. These students, many facing financial barriers, had their school fees covered from Primary 1 to Primary 6. Additionally, Primary 6 students had their Common Entrance Examination fees fully paid, allowing them to continue their education without interruption.
